Things to do in Ghana this 2021 Holiday Season

December is a busy time around the world as many countries, cultures and religions celebrate an array of holidays at the end of the year. However, some say that Accra, Ghana’s largest city, is untouched when it comes to the assortment of activities, people and celebrations available in the country during this time.

From the largest festivals and concerts, to more mellow art exhibits or even events outside of the city, we have got you covered. Here is a list of 6 events we suggest you don’t miss while in Ghana this December.

The Freedom Xperience Concert featuring Shatta Wale & Medikal
Date: 10th December 2021
Location: D’effizy Mall, Ashongman-Abokobi Rd, Accra

Kicking the festivities straight into high gear is the Freedom Experience Concert. It boasts as headliners some of Ghana’s most popular artists - Shatta Wale and Medikal. If it’s one event where most people on the Ghanain party circuit will touch, it’s this one, as Ghanains always come out to represent when it comes to these two popular local artists. If you want to start the festivities off right and experience a true Ghanain concert, this is the one.
Popular But Broke 
Date: 11th December 2021

Location: National Theatre, Accra

For those who like comedy, this is the show for you. Ghana’s popular comedian Ob Amponash will headline Ghana’s first All-Star Comedy weekend at the National Theatre in Accra titled 'Popular but Broke". The show also features other popular and legendary Ghanaian comedians such as pioneer Fritz Baffour, a favourite Mikki Osei Berko- alias Master Richard, and Derick Kobina Bonney (DKB). It is sure to be a great event and something out of the ordinary if the party circuit isn’t for you.

Amapiano Festival
Date: 19th December 2021
Location: Garage, East Legon

For the first time ever, there will be an Amapiano Festival here in Ghana. As the genre continues to take over Ghana and the West African region, this festival is set to to be a musical showcase and cultural exchange of the popular South African genre. If you’re a fan of Amapiano, it's going to be playing all night. You’d definitely want to check this out.



Ankos Takoradi Masquerade festival
Date: 24th - 26th December 2021
Location: Takoradi, Western Region

The Ankos Takoradi Masquerade festival is a yearly event celebrated by the people of Takoradi in the Western region of Ghana. The main celebration occurs where hundreds of people in groups dress in costume and compete in art and dance. Many tourists flock to Takoradi to witness the event where live brass music is enjoyed by everyone in the streets over a period of two days.

Adrien Sauvage's Art Exhibition
Date: 10th December 2021 - 30th January 2022
Location: ADA Contemporary Art Gallery, Airport Residential Area, Accra

For those persons who cater to a more mellow and creative lifestyle, this is probably right up your alley. Los-Angeles based designer and photographer Adrien Sauvage's series entitled I AM is on display at the ADA Contemporary Art Gallery here in Accra. According to the host gallery, this series "showcases layers of merging cultures and aesthetics, expressed through the raw and vulnerable visual storytelling of authentic African narratives, capturing the carefree spirit and strength of modern Ghanaian life." This is definitely something you'd want to see while here in Accra.
Adrien Victor Sauvage

Afrochella Festival
Date: 28th December 2021
Location: El Wak Stadium, Cantonments, Accra

Afrochella is one of, if not, thee most popular event among visitors here in Accra in December. With headliners such as Wiz Kid and Stonebwoy, why wouldn't it draw some of the largest crowds? A celebration of Africa's diverse culture and the work of african creative and entrepreneurs, the festival seeks to teach, elevate, highlight and explore African music, cuisine, art and so much more.
