World Sight Day: Protecting the Gift of Vision

Every second Thursday of October, the world comes together to celebrate World Sight Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about eye health and the importance of preventing avoidable vision loss. This year, Bôhten joins the call to action by encouraging everyone to make eye care a priority, not just for today, but every day.

Why Eye Health Matters

Your eyes are your window to the world. They allow you to read, drive, recognize loved ones, and experience life in full color. Yet, millions of people worldwide live with vision problems that could have been prevented or corrected with early care.

According to the World Health Organization, over 2 billion people experience visual impairment or blindness, and half of these cases are avoidable. Common causes include:

  • Uncorrected refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism)
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

The good news? Most of these conditions can be detected and treated early with routine eye exams.

Simple Habits to Protect Your Eyes

Maintaining healthy vision isn’t complicated, it’s about consistency and awareness. Here are five key habits everyone should practice:

  1. Get regular eye exams: Even if you don’t notice vision changes, comprehensive eye exams can detect silent conditions like glaucoma or early diabetic eye disease. Adults should aim for an exam every one to two years.
  2. Protect your eyes from UV rays: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage the cornea and lens. Always wear UV-protective sunglasses, like Bôhten’s polarized lenses, when outdoors.
  3. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps reduce digital eye strain.
  4. Eat for your eyes: A diet rich in leafy greens, citrus fruits, and omega-3 fatty acids supports healthy vision and reduces the risk of age-related eye diseases.
  5. Know your family history: Some eye conditions are hereditary. Sharing this information with your optometrist can guide early screening and care.
