Bohten's lineage can be traced back to a long and storied history of black cultural innovators. Each month, we celebrate the style inspiration of icons who flawlessly express their flair through lenses.
Our July Black Star Inspiration is none other than 17 year old producer, philanthropist and actress Marsai Martin.
Caila Marsai Martin has been in the acting and film industry for almost her entire life. And though it has only been 17 years, she has made colossal waves and achieved the title of being the first in many categories in Hollywood. Born in Plano, Texas, Marsai landed her first national commercial at the tender age of 5 but was acting long before then.
Her family moved to Los Angeles not long after for her to pursue a career in acting. This worked out for the best as she landed another major national commercial and soon after was selected for a co-star role on the ABC Emmy Nominated network comedy ‘Black-ish’. She was 10.
Marsai featured along star studded actors and actresses such as Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson and Laurence Fishburne in the comedy show while steadily holding her own on screen. For her role in the show, she’s been awarded two NAACP Image Awards and a Screen Actors Guild award, but her talent doesn’t stop there.
Marsai is the founder of film production company Genius Productions, a company that “creates compelling stories for television, features, and digital.” The company is known for its “passion for storytelling, unmatched work ethic and a relentless commitment to originality and telling unique stories.” She was the youngest person to get a first look deal with Universal at 14 years old and is the youngest ever African American producer and Executive Producer. She produced and starred in 'Little' alongside Issa Rae at the age of 14 and pitched the idea to business executives at the age of 10!
Another thing Marsai is famous for? Her memes. They’re priceless.
Marsai has done an amazing job rocking her frames throughout her life on and off the screen - intertwining it in many of her fashion looks as she got older.
We love how she's not afraid to switch up her look and don the variety of frames types that suit her face.
You can follow more of what Marsai is up to on her Tik Tok where you can track just how far this talented super star will go.
