Kickstart 2025 with These Essential Eye Care Tips for Better Vision

Each month, we feature a post on eye health and eye care written by our very own Bôhten Optometrist Dr. Henry. Providing insight on the dos and don'ts of eye care is our way of educating our community with the hope of improving eye health overall.

As we step into a new year filled with opportunities, many of us are setting resolutions to improve our health and well-being. While fitness and diet often top the list, your eye health deserves equal attention. After all, our eyes play a crucial role in how we experience the world. Here are some practical eye health resolutions to ensure 2025 is a year of clearer vision and healthier habits.

1. Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Many vision problems develop gradually, making it easy to overlook symptoms. Start the year by booking a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist. These exams not only detect vision changes but also uncover potential health issues like glaucoma, cataracts, or even diabetes. Aim to schedule one annually, or as advised by your doctor.

2. Prioritize the 20-20-20 Rule

In our increasingly digital world, prolonged screen time is unavoidable. Combat digital eye strain by practicing the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple habit reduces eye fatigue and protects your long-term vision.

3. Upgrade Your Eyewear

If you wear glasses, ensure your prescription is up-to-date. Consider investing in eyewear with blue light protection if you spend significant time on screens. For those with specific needs, such as sports or outdoor activities, explore specialty eyewear options that offer enhanced functionality and protection. Check out our glasses collection.

4. Eat for Eye Health

Your diet plays a critical role in maintaining healthy vision. Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, zinc, and lutein. Think leafy greens, carrots, fish, citrus fruits, and nuts. Staying hydrated is equally important for preventing dry eyes.

5. Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays

UV protection isn’t just for summer. Even in winter, UV rays can harm your eyes, increasing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Always wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection when outdoors, regardless of the season.

6. Quit Smoking

Smoking is linked to an increased risk of eye diseases like macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye. If you’ve been thinking about quitting, let 2025 be the year you take this important step, not just for your vision but for your overall health.

7. Maintain a Clean Environment for Contact Lenses

If you wear contact lenses, ensure you’re following proper hygiene practices. Clean and store lenses as directed, replace them regularly, and avoid wearing them longer than recommended. This reduces the risk of infections and keeps your eyes healthy.

8. Teach Eye Care to Your Family

Eye health isn’t just an individual effort. Educate your children and loved ones about the importance of vision care. Ensure kids have their eyes checked before school starts, and encourage family members to adopt healthy habits like reducing screen time and wearing protective eyewear.

9. Stay Active and Manage Health Conditions

Regular physical activity improves blood circulation, which benefits your eyes. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other health conditions, managing them effectively is vital for preventing vision complications.

10. Rest and Refresh Your Eyes

Lastly, don’t forget to give your eyes the rest they need. Adequate sleep and regular breaks from screens are essential for preventing eye strain and maintaining optimal eye health.

Make 2025 a Year of Clear Vision

Your eyes work hard for you every day—this year, make them a priority. By adopting these resolutions, you’ll not only improve your vision but also your overall quality of life. Here’s to a healthier, clearer 2025!
