She began playing tennis at the age of 11, after her friend Susan Williams took her to play for the first time at a country club. When she swung the racket, she knew this was what she wanted to do with her life. In 1968, she turned professional and went on to win 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles.

This became the start of women's professional tennis. Through WTA, she lobbied for equal prize money for men and women at the U.S Open and found a sponsor to ensure it happened. This made the U.S Open the first major tournament to offer equal prize money. The WTA continues to help to provide more opportunities for women to play professional tennis and earn a living from the sport.

In addition to her impressive tennis career, Billie Jean King was a fierce advocate for women's rights and gender equality. She maintained her high ranking status and won three of her Grand Slam singles titles during this time.
