Craftsmanship & Manufacturing
African Vision. Global Craftsmanship.
Since Bôhten's earliest collections, our approach to manufacturing has been global by design.
Over the course of our history, we have worked with specialized eyewear manufacturers and craftspeople in Japan, Italy, and China - three countries with deep expertise in premium optical manufacturing. We select manufacturing partners based on their capabilities, materials, construction techniques, quality standards, and the specific requirements of each Bôhten collection.
We believe transparency about where and how our eyewear is made is an important part of building a lasting brand.
Premium Acetate
Our acetate collections are produced with experienced eyewear manufacturers in Italy and China, using premium materials including Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, one of the most established acetate manufacturers in the global eyewear industry.
Each frame moves through multiple stages of production, finishing, assembly, and quality control to achieve the proportions, surface finish, comfort, and durability required by Bôhten.
Throughout our history, we have also worked with Japanese manufacturing partners, drawing on Japan's longstanding expertise in precision eyewear production and craftsmanship.
Our manufacturing footprint has evolved as Bôhten has grown, but the principle has remained consistent: work with the specialist best equipped to execute the product.
Our Wood Heritage
Wood has been part of Bôhten's design language since the beginning.
Our wood frames incorporate reclaimed and responsibly selected wood species sourced from around the world. Because wood is a natural material, variations in grain, texture, and tone make every frame subtly different.
Rather than hiding those variations, we celebrate them. With wear, the material can develop additional character and patina, allowing the frame to become more personal over time.
Built for Everyday Wear
Material is only one part of a well-made frame. Bôhten frames are engineered with quality hinges, hardware, and construction methods selected to provide stability, comfortable movement, and durability through everyday use.
Fit is equally important. Our frames are developed around the faces and communities we serve, with careful attention to proportions, bridge design, frame width, balance, and all-day comfort.
The Bôhten Hub: Building Capacity in Ghana
Our connection to Ghana goes beyond inspiration and material sourcing.
In 2018, Bôhten established the Bôhten Hub in Accra, Ghana as a dedicated space for product development, prototyping, frame fitting, repair, experimentation, and creative collaboration. The Hub gave our team an opportunity to bring more of the eyewear development process closer to home while building knowledge and technical experience within Ghana.
The space supported early prototyping through tools including 3D printing, CNC technology and laser engraving, while also serving as a base for Bôhten's product and community initiatives in Africa.
While the original Bôhten Hub is not currently operational, it remains an important chapter in the evolution of our manufacturing philosophy.
The experience helped shape the model we use today: Bôhten's product vision and African design perspective are connected to Ghana, while specialized manufacturing capabilities are sourced through experienced partners in Japan, Italy and China.
Our long-term ambition remains larger than simply importing finished eyewear. We believe African brands can participate more deeply in the global optical value chain - from design and product development to optical services, technical knowledge and, ultimately, greater manufacturing capability on the continent.
The Bôhten Hub was an early investment in that vision. The next chapter will build on what we learned.
Optical Craftsmanship
Bôhten is not only a frame company. We are an optical brand.
For prescription orders, we work with Black-owned optical laboratories in Ghana, Canada, and the United States to produce and finish prescription lenses to the requirements of each order.
This allows us to combine global frame manufacturing expertise with optical craftsmanship closer to the communities we serve.
African Vision. Global Craftsmanship.
Bôhten was founded with an African perspective on design, material, culture, and fit. That does not mean pretending every component of our eyewear comes from one place. Modern premium eyewear is a global craft.
Across our history, Bôhten has worked with manufacturing partners in Japan, Italy, and China, material suppliers including Mazzucchelli in Italy, reclaimed wood sources from around the world, and optical laboratories across Ghana, Canada, and the United States.
What connects them is the Bôhten standard: thoughtful design, quality materials, specialized craftsmanship, considered fit, and products made to be worn for years.
Designed by Bôhten. Crafted by specialists. Made for the world.
